Aeration also known as soil cultivation is a process where small plugs of soil, thatch and grass are extracted from the turf. This process is extremely beneficial to the growth and health of your lawn and is normally done in the spring and fall. There are many benefits of aeration: 1) reduces compaction, 2) allows water to seep down to the grass roots for better water absorption and less runoff, 3) increases sub-surface air flow, 4) promotes strong turf root systems, 5) encourages thatch disintegration, 6) improves hardiness, heat & drought tolerance, and 7) enhances effectiveness of weed control, fertilizer and pest control applications.
NOTE: Aeration during a drought is not recommended due to the excessive stress to the root zone.
